Teach your kids about driving, customizing and downforce with Actev Arrow Smart Kart

Battery-powered kart can be overridden by parent’s phone

As kids growing up in the ’80s, we spent most of our time outside hopping fences, climbing trees, riding bikes and generally causing trouble in an innocent, child-like way. Video games hadn’t crept into the living room yet and Internet-enabled computers were still a few years off. But if I was 7 today, with PlayStations, tablets and virtual reality headsets, I suspect it would be a lot more trouble trying to pry me off the couch. Enter the Actev Arrow Smart Kart, the latest sign that we missed the golden age of being a kid.

This electric-powered, extra-safe go-kart has a 12-mph top speed and is recommended for kids 5-9 years old. It’s built on a rigid steel frame and has adjustable pedals to grow with your child. The Smart Kart uses two, 250-watt electric motors for power, lasting about 45 minutes of driving time, and can be controlled remotely from the parent’s Android or Apple smartphone. A double-capacity battery is optional, for $49.95, which lasts about double driving time. Charging takes about 8.5 hours with the standard setup, 1.5 hours with the optional rapid charger.

The app can control top speed, uses a geo-fencing function to keep kids within earshot, and can stop the kart in an emergency. That probably won’t happen, though, considering that this kart, like many vehicles on the road today, has forward-collision prevention. Two sensors on the bumper should help keep your kid out of trouble.

The Arrow Smart Kart is good for kids ages 5 to 9 years old.

Once you get one and your kid is totally into driving, you can order the F1-style body kit and get him or her into customizing, too. The nose, side pods and wings are available in either red or silver for about $100. Honestly, we don’t think anyone would complain if you painted some orange flames on the side or threw a few stickers on the back.

Finally, turn the kid into a full Ken Block clone with the plastic drift wheels that will be available later this year. The rings fit over the pneumatic rubber tires for supreme tail-wagging ability. Maybe wait until they’re 9 to put them in their first “Gymkhana” video.

“As a longtime car enthusiast, I wanted to leverage my 35 years of technology experience to bring a whole new category of fun and safe vehicles to families,” said Dave Bell, Actev Motors CEO and co-founder. “Simple battery-powered ride-on cars don’t excite today’s kids, they seek high-tech interactive experiences. The Arrow Smart Kart gets kids off the couch and outside, and behind the wheel of a real driving machine.”

The Arrow Smart Kart, priced at $600, is now available to pre-order online and will begin shipping early this summer. If we were to ask for one more thing from Actev, it’d be a parent-sized kart. Get on it, Actev!
