Volvo’s Geneva luxo-liner will battle the long-wheelbase Range Rover in the U.S. starting this spring
Volvo debuted the modestly-named XC90 Excellence at the Shanghai auto show last spring with an interior aimed to take the long-wheelbase Range Rover Autobiography head on; this week, the niche model will debut at the Geneva motor show prior to its U.S. launch.
His Excellency the XC90 is a luxury version that features a redesigned rear passenger compartment with two power-reclining rear seats boasting massage and ventilation functions, as well as a new center console with an armrest that stores fold-out tray tables — just like Business Class on Scandinavian Airlines. There’s a fridge there too, located parallel to the seatbacks, and it comes complete with handmade Orrefors crystal glasses.
The luxury XC90 liner will also offer leather detailing in charcoal or blonde colors, ambient lighting, footrests and a dividing screen for the rear cargo area. Volvo will also stuff a little more sound insulation underneath the body panels to keep out noise from the unwashed masses; Pirelli Noise Cancelling System tires will help with that, as well.
“The XC90 Excellence offers a sublime and luxurious experience. It is our top-of-the-line XC90 offer and we see a lot of interest from our more affluent customers,” said Björn Annwall, senior vice president marketing, sales and service at Volvo Cars. “The additional sound insulation, enhanced Bowers & Wilkins sound system and convenience of rear seat controls takes the XC90 Excellence to a new level of luxurious calm and comfort.”
How much will all this excellence cost? Pricing will be announced closer to the model’s launch this summer, but expect a hefty premium over the most expensive version of the SUV; the XC90 T8 Inscription currently starts at $72,595 before the federal and state tax credits.
